College football is slowly killing itself.


The sport continues to be more and more money-driven, and is already like a lesser version of the NFL in many ways. However, the NFL is wise enough to have a draft, and a salary cap, to ensure competitive balance. As college football continues this mad rush to pour more dollars and more talent into an ever-shrinking number of programs, more and more fans of teams with no realistic chance to compete are tuning out. The problem with college football is ultimately not the NIL stuff or the conference realignments. The problem is that there is no central governing body with enough power and wisdom to focus on the long term health of the sport. College football is now what the NFL would look like if there was no commissioner and the 10 franchises in the biggest markets were all owned by Jerry Jones types.
